This evening brings together expert knitters Freddie Garforth, Will Wakeley and Ardeshir Ehteshami, who will, in conversation with our Honorary Secretary Anja Tröger, talk about their personal passion for knitting, and their connection to Scandinavian knitting styles. From an academic research perspective, we will learn how knitting carries on tradition while shaping a sense of Norwegian identity. Bring along your ‘strikkeskatter’ – your Norwegian knitting treasures – and let’s get the conversation going! All welcome!

REPORTING SCOTLAND – THE NORWEGIAN WAY : ADVENTURES IN
WHISKY, TWEED AND TARTAN

Glasgow-based journalist, Ingvild Paulsen, has been covering Scotland for the Norwegian press for over 20 years and has never run out of material. In this talk, she will take you behind the scenes of her best stories and show what Norwegians can learn from Scotland’s unique heritage. There will be smoky tales of single malt whisky, tweed-threads in a tangle at Isle of Harris and an encounter with the ‘bad boy of kilts’ in Edinburgh. All welcome!

FOOD & FILM NIGHT

Join us at the Golf Tavern, Bruntsfield, Edinburgh, for a screening of the 2023 documentary Songs of Earth (Fedrelandet). The director, Marghret Olin, follows her 84-year-old father through a year in the natural surroundings of Oldedalen, where he grew up. The film takes us on a journey into nature’s smallest life and out to grand panoramas, contemplating life, death, nature and simply being in the world. RÁN – THE FORGOTTEN NORSE GODDESS OF LIMINALITY & HER
REALM OF THE SEA

Researcher Ilona Sindhu takes us on a journey into the water worlds of Norse Mythology and the realm of the sea goddess Rán. Vikings, who relied on the ocean for their well-being, knew that Rán could take their lives at any moment. Like Hel and the Valkyries, her mythological sisters, she was a powerful figure. Taken to mean ‘betwixt and between’, liminality perfectly describes the ocean and the goddess who rules it, highlighting that Rán belongs alongside Hel and the Valkyries as a powerful woman of the realm of the dead, simultaneously embodying both death and vitality. All welcome!

This special event offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the spirit and charm of their muchloved musical gatherings. Edinburgh Scandi Session is a vibrant community dedicated to preserving, performing, and promoting Scandinavian music in the city. FUTURE LIBRARY – THE VISIONARY, SCOTTISH-CONCEIVED
PUBLISHING PROJECT HOSTED IN NORWAY

One thousand trees have been planted in Nordmarka, a forest just outside Oslo, which will supply paper for a special anthology of books to be printed in one hundred years’ time. Between now and then, one writer every year will contribute a text, with the writings held in trust, unpublished, until the year 2114. Conceived by Scottish artist, Katie Paterson, with novelist Margaret Atwood the first contributor, the project’s ‘silent room’ in Oslo is filling with future literary treasures. Join translator and fan, Kari Dickson, for an exploration of the physical and conceptual Future Library – past, present and future. All welcome! (For members this event is followed by a short AGM).
